KALIMĀT: MUSLIM DECLARATIONS OF FAITH AND BELIEF
The First Kalimah: Kalimah At-Tayyiba:
The Declaration of Faith in Islāmic Monotheism
Lā ilāha Illallāh Muhammad u’r Rasūlullāh
None is worthy of worship except Allāh
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allāh
The Second Kalimah: Kalimah Ash-Shahāda:
The Muslim Testimony of Faith in Islāmic Monotheism
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha Illallāh
Wahdahū lā sharīka lahū
wa ash-hadu anna Muhammad-an
‘Abduhū wa Rasūluhū
I bear witness that none is worthy of worship except Allāh
He is One. He has no partner.
And I bear witness that Muhammad
is His Devotee and His Messenger.
The Third Kalimah: Kalimah At-Tamjīd:
The Declaration of the Glory of Allāh
SubhānAllāh wa’l Hamdu Lillāh
wa lā ilāha Illallāh
Wallāhu Akbar
wa lā hawla wa lā quwwata
illā Billāhi’l ‘Aliyy i’l ‘Azīm
Glory be to Allāh and all Praise is for Allāh
and none is worthy of worship except Allāh
and Allāh is Most Great
and there is no power and no strength
except from Allāh, the Most High, the Most Great.
The Fourth Kalimah: Kalimah At-Tawhīd:
The Declaration of the Oneness of Allāh
Lā ilāha Illallāh
Wahdahū lā sharīka lahū
Lahu’l Mulku wa Lahu’l Hamdu
Yuhyī wa Yumītu
Biyadihi’l khayru
wa Huwa ‘alā kulli shay-in Qadīr
None is worthy of worship except Allāh
He is One. He has no partner.
His is the Kingdom and His is the Praise
He gives life and causes death.
In His hand is all that is good
and He is Powerful over all things.
The Fifth Kalimah: Kalimah Radd i’l-Kufr
The Declaration of the Refutation of disbelief and polytheism
Allāhumma innī a’ūdhu bika
min an ushrika bika shay-an wa ana a’lamu bihī
wa astaghfiruka limā lā a’lamu bihī
tubtu ‘anhu wa tabarra’tu
minal kufri wa’sh shirki wa’l ma’āsī kullihā
wa aslamtu wa āmantu wa aqūlu
Lā ilāha Illallāh Muhammad u’r Rasūlullāh
O Allāh! Indeed I seek refuge with You
to be saved from all kinds of polytheism which I know about
and I beg Your forgiveness for that which I do not know about.
I repent from that and I free myself
from disbelief and idolatry and all wrong doings
and I have accepted Islām, and proclaiming my belief, I declare:
None is worthy of worship except Allāh
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allāh
Muslim Beliefs Stated Concisely
Āmantu Billāhi kamā Huwa bi Asmāihī wa Sifātihī
wa qabiltu jamī’a Ahkāmihī
I believe in Allāh as He Is known by His Most Beautiful Names and Attributes
and I have accepted all His Commandments
Muslim Beliefs Stated Comprehensively: The Articles of Muslim Faith
Āmantu Billāhi wa Malāikatihī wa Kutubihī
wa Rusulihī wa’l Yawmi’l Ākhiri
wa’l qadari khayrihī wa sharrihī minAllāhi Ta’ālā
wa’l ba’thi ba’dal mawt
I believe in Allāh, and in His Angels, and in his Revealed Books,
and in His Prophetic Messengers, and in the Last Day,
and in the Pre-Ordainment, that the good in it and bad in it, is from Allāh, The Exalted,
and in the Resurrection after death (on the Day of Judgement).
THE ZIKR OF THE KALIMĀT
According to a Hadīth (Saying) of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa Sallam, the best Zikr (remembrance of Allāh) is to recite the first Kalimah. So Muslims make it a habit to recite the first Kalimah at least 100 times every day. Sayyidī wa Murshidī al-Habīb Ahmad Mash-hūr bin Tāhā al-Haddād Rady Allāhu ‘Anhu has encouraged us in his spiritual classic Miftāh u’l Jannah (The Key To Paradise) to do the Zikr of the first four Kalimāt. The first four Kalimāt and more are included in the awrād and adhkār (regular voluntary invocations) of Imām ‘Abdallāh bin ‘Alawī al-Haddād, Rady Allāhu ‘Anhu, such as the Rātib al-Haddād, the Wird u’l Latīf, and the Wird u’l Kabīr.
The Articles of Muslim Faith have been explained in great detail by Imām u’l A’zam Imām Abū Hanīfa Rady Allāhu ‘Anhu, Imām Abu’l Hasan al-Ash’arī Rady Allāhu ‘Anhu, and by Imām ‘Abdallāh bin ‘Alawī al-Haddād Rady Allāhu ‘Anhu in ‘Aqīdatu’l Islām (Muslim Beliefs and Convictions).
