Sayings of Prophet Muhammad
may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him

'Amal Saleh (Good Deeds)

Niyyah (Intention)
On the authority of the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyidina Abu Hafs, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) say:

"Actions are but by intention and every man shall have only that which he intended. Thus he whose migration was for Allah and His Messenger, his migration was for Allah and His Messenger, and he whose migration was to achieve some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated". (Bukhari, Muslim)

The Rewards of Good Deeds
Hadrat 'AbdAllah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) related this Saying from his Lord:

Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) has written down the good deeds and the bad ones. Then He explained it (by saying that) he who has intended a good deed and has not done it, Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) writes it down with Himself as a full good deed; but if he has intended it and has done it, Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) writes it down with Himself as from ten good deeds to seven hundred times, or many times over. But if he has intended a bad deed and has not done it, Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) writes it down with Himself as a full good deed, but if he has intended it and has done it, Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) writes it down as one bad deed. (Bukhari and Muslim)

On the authority of Hadrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) who reported that Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said: Whosoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) will remove from him one of the griefs of the Day of Judgement. Whosoever alleviates (the lot of) a needy person, Allah will alleviate (his lot) in this world and the next. Whosoever shields a Muslim, Allah will shield him in this world and the next. Allah will aid a servant (of His) so long as the servant aids his brother. Whosoever follows a path to seek knowledge therein, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise. No people gather together in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, without tranquility descending upon them, mercy enveloping them, the angles surrounding them, and Allah (The Glorified and the Exalted) making mention of them amongst those who are with Him. Whosoever is slowed down by his actions will not be hastened forward by his lineage. (Muslim)

Examples of Good Deeds
Hadrat Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that "my beloved friend" (the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) has enjoined five things upon me. He has commanded me to love and be close to the poor and the downtrodden, and he has commanded me to look at those in the world who are of lower rank than me, and not at those who are of higher rank, and he has commanded me to be kind to the kinsman and to preserve and keep intact the bond of kinship, and he has commanded me not to ask for anything from anyone as a favour and he has commanded me to speak the truth at all times though it may be bitter for others, and he has commanded me to care nothing for the rebuke of those who revile and villify in the path of Allah, and he has commanded me to recite much the Kalima of Laa Hawla wa laa Qawwata Illaa Billah (there is no power or strength but in Allah) because all these things are from the treasure-house (of Allah) which is under the ninth heaven. (Ahmad)

Hadrat Al-Bara' bin 'Adhib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) gave us seven commands and seven prohibitions. He commanded us to visit the sick, to follow funerals, to say "Allah have mercy on you" when someone sneezes, to return salutations, to accept invitations, to help people to fulfil their oaths, and to help the wronged; and he forbade us (men) gold rings, silk, thick brocade, embroidered silk, red stuffing placed on a saddle, Qassi (silk) garments and silver vessels. A version says drinking from silver vessels, for he who drinks out of them in this world will not drink out of them in the next. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Taking care of orphans
Hadrat Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "Myself and someone who takes care of an orphan, will be together in Paradise like this," and he raised his forefinger and middle finger jointly, leaving space between them (to show how close they will be in Paradise). (Bukhari)

Looking after widows and the poor
Narrated Hadrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "The one who looks after a widow or a poor person is like a Mujahid (warrior) who fights for Allah's Cause, or like him who performs prayers all the night and fasts all the days." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Truthfulness
Hadrat 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said: 'A true action leads to the path of virtue and good deeds, and virtue paves the way of a person to Paradise, and the said person continues to speak the truth till in the sight of Allah (The Glorified and The Exalted) he is named Siddiq (Truthful). Lying leads to vice, and vice leads to indecent acts and if a person goes on lying, in the sight of Allah (The Glorified and The Exalted) he is named a liar. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Sabr (Patience)
Hadrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said he heard Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) declare that Allah Who is The Glorious and Exalted said, "When I afflict My servant in his two loved things (i.e. his eyes), and he endures patiently, I shall compensate him for them with Paradise." (Bukhari)

Hadrat Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying: When a man's child dies, Allah Most High asks His angels whether they have taken His servant's child and they reply that they have. He then asks whether they have taken the fruit of his heart, and when they reply that they have, He asks what His servant said. On their replying that he praised Allah and said, "We belong to Allah and to Him do we return," Allah says, "Build a house in Paradise for my servant and call it the House of Praise." (Ahmad and Tirmidhi)

Showing Mercy
Narrated Hadrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "Allah (The Glorified and The Exalted) is not merciful to him who is not merciful to men." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Respect (adab), gentleness and deliberation
Umm Aban, daughter of al-Wazi' bin Zari', quoting his grandfather, who was a member of the deputation of 'Abd al-Qais, said: When we came to Madina, we raced to be the first to dismount and kiss the hand and foot of Allah's Prophetic Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him). But al-Mundhir al-Ashajj waited until he came to the bundle of his clothes and he put on his two garments, and then he went to Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him). He said to him: You have two characteristics which Allah likes: gentleness and deliberation. He asked: "Have I acquired them or has Allah (The Glorified and The Exalted) created (them) in me by nature?" He replied: "Allah (The Glorified and The Exalted) has created (them) in you by nature". He then said: "Praise be to Allah (The Glorified and The Exalted) Who has created in me by nature two characteristics which Allah and His Prophetic Messenger like". (Abu Dawud)

Contentment
Hadrat 'Abdallah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "He is successful who has accepted Islam, been provided with what is sufficient for his want, and been made contented by Allah with what He has given him." (Muslim)

Narrated Hadrat 'AbdAllah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessing and peace be upon him) said, "A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food), and a kafir (unbeliever) or a hypocrite eats in seven intestines (eats too much)." (Bukhari)

Making things easy
Hadrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessing and peace be upon him) sent one of his Companions to attend to some of his affairs, he said, "Gladden people and do not scare them; make things easy and do not make them difficult." (Bukhari and Muslim)

The Example of Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) (once) asked who had observed a fast that day and Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said he had. He asked who had followed a bier that day and Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said he had. He asked who had fed a poor man that day and Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said he had. He asked who had visited an invalid that day and Sayyidina Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said he had. Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) then said: "Anyone in whom these good deeds are combined will certainly enter Paradise." (Muslim)

The Example of Sayyidatina 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)
Yahya bin Sa'id said that 'Abd ar-Rahman bin Abu Bakr died in his sleep and that his sister, the Mother of Faithful Believers, Sayyidatina 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) emancipated many slaves on his behalf. (Malik)

The Example of Sayyidina Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadrat Buraida (may Allah be pleased with him) said that one morning Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) called Hadrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "What did you do to get to Paradise before me? I have never entered Paradise without hearing the rustling of your garments in front of me." He replied, "Messenger of Allah, I have never called the adhan without praying two rak'a (salah) and no impurity has ever happened to me without my performing ablution on the spot and thinking that I owed Allah (The Glorified and The Exalted) two rak'a." Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said. "It is because of them." (Tirmidhi)

The Example of Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him)
Narrated Hadrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) would go to enquire about ailing persons, accompany funeral processions, accept invitations of slaves and ride a mule. On the day of the battle of Khaibar he was seen riding a mule with its reins made of the bark of date-palm. (Ibn Majah)

Hadrat Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: It never happened that Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) was asked for anything and he said: "No". (Muslim)
