Tahara: Ritual Purity in Islam

Removing Impurity (Najasah)
Hadrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He (meaning Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) forbade us to face the qibla when easing ourselves or passing water, or to wipe ourselves with the right hand, or to wipe ourselves with less than three stones, or to wipe ourselves with dung or bone." (Muslim)

How to perform Ablution (wudu)
Hadrat 'Abdallah bin Zaid bin 'Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) on being asked how Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) used to perform ablution, called for ablution water and poured it over his hands, washing each hand twice. He then rinsed his mouth and cleared his nose with water three times. He then washed his face three times, then washed each arm twice up to the elbows, then wiped his head both front and back with his hands, beginning with the front of the head and moving them to the nape of the neck, then bringing them back to the place from which he began. He then washed his feet. (Malik and an-Nasai)

The Merits of doing Wudu
Hadrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "On the Day of Judgement when my followers will be summoned, their foreheads will be glowing and their limbs radiant on account of the ablution performed. Therefore, whoso wishes to increase the glow of his forehead, let him do so." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Ghusl (Purifying bath)
Narrated Hadrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "When a man sits in between the four parts of a woman and did the sexual intercourse with her, bath becomes compulsory." (Bukhari)

Ghusl on Friday
Hadrat Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "Bathing on Friday is obligatory on everyone who has reached puberty." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Menses (Haid)
Narrated mother of faithful believers, Hadrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said to me, "Give up the prayer when your menses begin and when it has finished, wash the blood off your body (take a bath) and start praying." (Bukhari)

Tayammum
Narrated Hadrat Imran bin Husain Al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him): Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) saw a person sitting aloof and not praying with the people. He asked him, "O so and so! What prevented you from offering the prayer with the people?" He replied, "O Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him)! I am Junub (ritually impure) and there is no water." The Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) said, "Perform Tayammum with clean earth and that will be sufficient for you." (Bukhari)

Use of Miswak
Mother of faithful believers, Hadrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) as saying, "The prayer before which the tooth-stick is used is seventy times more excellent than that before which it is not used." (Baihaqi)
